Savannah’s Riverfront District offers a unique blend of history, culture, and activity along the banks of the Savannah River. What was once the original port of the Georgia colony has evolved into one of the city’s most popular places to explore.

Today, the historic waterfront is lined with restored warehouses, cobblestone streets, shops, and restaurants overlooking the river. East Bay Inn, our historic hotel on East Bay Street, is just steps from the riverfront but slightly removed from the busy River Street promenade, giving guests convenient access to the area while still enjoying a quieter location in Savannah’s Historic District.

Walk Along the Historic Cobblestone Streets in the Riverfront District

One of the first things to do in the Riverfront District is take a stroll along the historic cobblestone streets. Many of these stones date back to the 18th and 19th centuries and give visitors a strong sense of Savannah’s maritime past. Interestingly, many of the cobblestones were originally used as ballast in ships arriving from Europe. Once the ships unloaded their cargo in Savannah, the stones were repurposed to pave the streets along the waterfront. Today, walking here offers a scenic way to explore the area’s shops, galleries, and restaurants. Just above River Street sits Factors Walk, a series of historic bridges, ramps, and walkways that once connected Savannah’s cotton warehouses with the merchants, known as “factors,” who traded goods along the riverfront.

  • Admire the antebellum architecture of former cotton warehouses that have been restored into boutiques and eateries.

  • Visit nearby River Street for souvenir shops and local arts and crafts.

  • Watch riverboats glide past from one of the many benches along the riverwalk.

  • Take care on the original stone staircases connecting East Bay Street and River Street. The steps are steep and uneven, but full of historic character.

Take a Savannah Riverboat Cruise

A riverboat cruise is one of the most enjoyable ways to see Savannah from the water. The city’s riverfront has been a hub of maritime activity for centuries, and today visitors can experience it aboard traditional-style paddlewheel riverboats that cruise along the Savannah River.

  • Daytime sightseeing cruises share stories about Savannah’s history, the busy port, and landmarks along the waterfront.

  • Evening cruises often include live music and dinner while the city lights reflect across the river.

  • Seasonal cruises sometimes feature holiday themes, special events, or narrated historical tours.

Booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak visiting season.

Explore the Shops and Art Galleries

The Riverfront District is home to a wide variety of shops and galleries showcasing local art and handmade goods. It is an excellent place to find unique gifts or souvenirs while exploring Savannah’s historic waterfront.

  • Browse galleries featuring paintings, sculptures, and photography by Savannah artists.

  • Visit specialty stores selling handmade jewelry, pottery, and coastal-inspired décor.

  • Look out for pop-up art displays and local vendors that occasionally appear along River Street.

One local favorite is River Street Sweets, famous for its pralines and free samples. The aroma of fresh candy often drifts through the air along the riverfront.

Many of these shops are located inside restored historic warehouses, adding another layer of character to the experience.

Dine at Waterfront Restaurants

Savannah’s Riverfront offers a wide range of dining options, many with outdoor seating overlooking the river. Fresh seafood is a highlight here, reflecting the city’s coastal location, though visitors will find everything from casual cafés to classic Southern restaurants.

  • Try local favorites such as shrimp and grits or a traditional Lowcountry boil.

  • Enjoy relaxed lunches along River Street or dine at restaurants with views of the river and passing ships.

  • Southern staples like fried green tomatoes and she-crab soup frequently appear on menus throughout the district.

Many restaurants along River Street also have outdoor seating where dogs are welcome, so guests exploring Savannah with their four-legged companions can still enjoy the riverfront dining scene.

If you are staying at East Bay Inn, our innkeepers are always happy to share their personal restaurant recommendations nearby. Reservations are often a good idea for popular spots, especially on weekends.

Enjoy Live Music and Events Along the Riverfront

Savannah’s Riverfront often hosts live music and seasonal events that add to the atmosphere along the river. On many evenings you may hear local musicians performing at nearby venues or outdoor patios overlooking the water.

  • Check local listings for concerts featuring jazz, blues, and regional bands.

  • Seasonal events such as the Savannah Boat Parade of Lights and holiday celebrations frequently take place along the waterfront.

  • Street performers and small pop-up performances often appear along River Street, especially on busy weekends.

These moments add a lively energy to the riverfront and offer visitors a glimpse into Savannah’s relaxed social scene.

Spot the Historic Cotton Exchange

While exploring Savannah’s Riverfront District, you may notice the historic Savannah Cotton Exchange building near River Street. In the 19th century, this was where cotton factors conducted business as Savannah became one of the most important cotton ports in the United States.

The building stands as a reminder of the city’s trading past and the role the riverfront played in Savannah’s economic growth. Even today, its distinctive architecture and historic markers help tell the story of the merchants and ships that once shaped this waterfront.

Relax Along the Riverfront

After exploring the district, take a moment to relax along Savannah’s riverfront promenade. Areas such as Rousakis Riverfront Plaza offer benches and open spaces where visitors can pause and take in views of the river.

  • Watch cargo ships and riverboats pass along the busy shipping channel.

  • Look for the famous “Waving Girl” statue overlooking the water.

  • Enjoy a quiet moment before heading back toward the restaurants and shops of River Street.

It is a pleasant way to slow down and take in the rhythm of the river before continuing your evening in Savannah.

Regardless of where your wanderings take you, River Street and Savannah’s historic riverfront offer plenty to see, taste, and experience. Staying at East Bay Inn on East Bay Street places you just steps from the Riverfront District while still enjoying a quieter corner of Savannah’s Historic District.
