Savannah’s Riverfront District offers a unique blend of history, culture, and vibrant activity along the banks of our trademark Savannah River. This area has transformed from a bustling port into one of the city’s most popular destinations. Whether you’re interested in historic sites, lively markets, or scenic views, the Riverfront District has something to offer. Our guests are often asking us what the best local attractions are by our East Bay Street Hotel. Luckily, since East Bay Inn straddles the Historic Downtown District along with Savannah's Riverfront District, our location offers the best of both worlds!
Walk Along the Historic Cobblestone Streets in the Riverfront District
One of the first things to do in the Riverfront District is to take a stroll along the cobblestone streets. These streets date back to the 18th century and give visitors a real sense of Savannah’s past. The cobblestones were originally used to help ships unload goods directly onto the docks. Today, walking here offers a peaceful way to explore the area’s shops, galleries, and restaurants.
Enjoy the antebellum architecture of restored warehouses turned into boutiques and eateries.
Visit River Street for souvenir shops and local arts and crafts.
Watch the riverboats glide by while sitting on one of the many benches.
Be mindful of your steps if using the original stairs! These stones are uneven but charming.

Visit the Savannah Riverboat Cruises
A riverboat cruise is a great way to see Savannah from a different perspective. Several companies operate tours that range from short sightseeing trips to dinner cruises.
Choose a daytime cruise to learn about Savannah’s history and landmarks.
Evening cruises often feature live music and dining options.
Some cruises offer themed experiences, such as holiday lights or jazz nights.
Booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak visiting season.

The Riverfront District is home to a variety of shops and galleries that showcase local art and handmade goods. This is an excellent place to find unique gifts or souvenirs.
Browse through galleries featuring paintings, sculptures, and photography by Savannah artists.
Visit specialty stores selling handmade jewelry, pottery, and coastal-themed décor.
Check out the weekend art markets for pop-up stalls and live demonstrations.
A local favorite is the seemingly endless Sweets shop that offers free samples and its intoxicating aroma wafts through the air.
Many shops are housed in historic buildings, adding to the charm of the shopping experience.

Try classic Southern dishes like shrimp and grits or low-country boil.
Enjoy casual bites at cafes or indulge in fine dining at upscale restaurants overlooking the water.
Don’t miss out on local specialties such as fried green tomatoes or she-crab soup, both are offered at the infamous Boars Head Tavern, several steps from our front door.

Street performers often add to the lively atmosphere along the riverwalk.
These events provide a chance to experience the local vibe and meet residents.

The Cotton Exchange Market is a historic building that now houses shops and eateries. It was once a hub for cotton trading, a major industry in Savannah’s history.
Explore the market for antiques, art, and local crafts.

The building’s architecture and history make it a fascinating stop.
